EIA: Nationwide generation and Texas residential prices declined in 2009

In its March 2010 release of “Electric Power Monthly,” which includes data through December 2009, the Energy Information Administration notes that nationwide:

  • Total net generation for 2009 was down 4.1 percent from 2008 levels.
  • Net generation attributable to coal-fired plants was down 11.1 percent for the year.
  • Nuclear generation was down 1.2 percent from 2008.
  • Generation from natural gas-fired plants was up by 4.2 percent in from 2008.
  • Generation from non-hydro renewables was up by 11.8 percent in 2009.
  • Total retail sales fell 4.2 percent in 2009.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption within the electric power sector decreased by an average of 8.6 percent from November 2008 to November 2009 compared with the previous year. (See PDF here.)

More specific to Texas: The average residential retail price fell by 8% in Texas over the course of 2009 (including areas in competition, areas outside competition, electric cooperatives and municipally-owned electric utilities).  Meanwhile, the average residential price for the rest of the nation was basically flat, increasing by 0.3%.
